DRL question

Post by crash »

anyone know where the DRL relay is on a 93?

not the fuse.. the actual relay?

when you start this one they don't come on until you turn on the headlights then shut them off again. then the DRL's are on as they should be for a Canada van.

this is one of the few things i will need working for getting a safety done.

Rob, on a 90 it is forward of the cowl on the passenger side. Hope this helps you and your 93/94 vans.

I've got the 93 service manual and wireing diagrams book. They don't show the exact location of the module or relay but I'm gueesing by looking at the diagrams that the relay is up above the ac blower housing with the fan relay (i'm guessing there should be 3 relays there on your vans) and there is a module under the dash.
I have a ban hammer and I ain't fraid to use it!

Justice, if you've got the factory wiring manual; then yes it does show where it's at. In the manual for my 90 there is a number under the dr relay. In my manual it's C144. C=connector. 1 represents zone 100. 100 is at or forward of the cowl. And 44 is the connector #.

Justice, I see you have a new hat now?????

Trybe, You have been reading those manuals of yours....

Back to the topic, Rob are both of your headlights the same? Are they both sealed beam halogen? If they are not, that could be the cause of your problem. (would be a nice simple fix now, wouldn't it? Ask me how long it took to figure that one out, LOL)

PS: The DRL module is in a small plastic container taped to the harness behind the headlight switch. The module is a small circuit board that slides out of the container - for lack of a better word.

well then... lol :-s

i would assume that both are the same.. however, we allll know what that means.

starting with the least amount of effort.. that's the first thing I'll check with my headlights from the 94 that were pulled to do the H4 conversion. i know they worked. that does sound like an interesting story on how you discovered this little mystery though James.. :-k

failing that .. i'll pull the switch and check the board solders.. failing that.. i'll swap the boards.

well... pulled both lights that were in there and replaced them with fairly new ones that were in my 94 when i got it. the 3 prongs on the old headlights were pretty corroded. so i really gooped on the dilectric grease before putting the new ones in. still didn't work.

ended up saying 'screw it' for now and wanted to get on with the checking the brakes so i started to put the screws back in drivers side done. passenger side almost tight and all of a sudden they (the DRL's) went out. what the heck?? started to loosen the screws again and on they came.. tightened again .. out. so i removed the light and cleaned off the other 3 big male things which i didn't think did anything at all and the metal housing the light mounts into. more dilectric grease and tightened them back up.. viola! .. DRL's seem to be working again.

now, personally i'm not really sure why or how this resolved the problem but i'm guessing that it's somehow related to what James mentioned. somehow.. :-k

either way. 5 turns of the key and they are still coming on... for nwo that's all that matters. \:D/

looks like you had something that grounding or losing ground.

Reminded me of right after I had a new motor installed in my 93, I went to honk the horn one day at some jackass and as soon as I hit the horn button, my radio and interior lights went out (fuse)

I took the front end apart to find that both horns had not been remounted and were causing a short where they were sitting. as soon as I got them bolted back into place, problem solved.

The key word here is - resistance. The DRL module 'looks' at the resistance of the headlight circuit. That is why I asked about the headlights being the same. If they are not the same resistance, they will not come on. The one I had a problem with before, every time you turned on the ignition, the DRL indicator would flash 3 times & then stay on. Ended up being mismatched bulbs.
Looks like you fixed your 'resistance' problem with some connector issues. \:D/
