V8 swap- Transmission 4l60E rebuild information

Post by Jinmajay »

I know the old site had this information (I think Larry did the writeup on it) and I am now at the point in my build where I'm ready to order the parts to rebuild/upgrade the tranny. I am not a transmission guy but am going to tackle it myself and am willing to document and take photo's for this site. I will need lots of help [-o< so pipe in if you have the time to help out.

Do I need a OEM service manual? I have that CD manual but it is very combersome to use.

I need the total start to finish list of parts needed.

I will eventually need help with torque converter selection.

Thanks in advance...

I know you should get a kit that has an extra set of clutch plates, I think the V6 trannies have 5, V8's have 6. Lockdoc is one of your best bests for the info on the tranny rebuilds!

I've heard that those are very good manuals. Check E-bay, you can get one cheap there.

If you buy a "Master Overhaul Kit" you'll get almost everything to do a stock rebuild. You'll want to get the Corvette servo and a .500 boost valve. A shift kit also. Some shift kits come with the .500 boost valve. Hope this helps. \:D/

I will find a source (e-bay) and call them to see it they have a kit that includes the shift kit. What ever I find I will post the info here for future use.

My trans is a shortly (AWD) will there be any difference in kits because of this?

Thanks for the info... :yawinkle:

Here is the infor From PATC
#K18. You get a stock Alto 4L60E master rebuild kit, oversize .490" Sonnax Mega Valve, a Corvette servo plus an Alto Red Eagle band and filter. This is the same master kit as #K2 without the Red Eagle 3-4 clutches. What this kit has that a stock 4L60E transmission doesn't have is the Alto Red Eagle band and an oversize pressure valve that is .020" larger than the largest factory valve. The .490" Mega Valve will give your transmission firmer shifts and more holding force on the clutches and band. Fits Chevy 1993-1996 4L60E transmissions. Cost $161.00.

#K18TC. " Street Raptor " Torque Converter (#1). Fits 4L60E transmissions (1993-1995). This heavy duty balanced converter has furnace brazed fins and added strength. If you have a problem with your fins coming loose this is the way to go. This converter stalls at 2200 to 2500 RPM and gives a faster launch than a stock converter. Also comes in 1700 and 2000 stall speeds. Rated up to 350 horse power. This is the converter we use with our level 2, 700-E Raptor Junior transmissions. You must buy the above #K18 Combo Kit to get this price. Cost $155.00.

Remember I will be running 350 HP. Will the stock Torque converter be ok or will I need to hange it?

Transgo kit
#32X. 4L60E Transgo Stage 2 Shift Kit. TRANSGO shift kits instantly reprogram automatic transmissions for high performance and durability. Cost $125.00

Will my 4.3 TC be ok behind the 350 hp V8? I think it will have a greater stall (which I think I want). They have street racing TC's for $200 but I'm not sure they will do much more then will the stock 4.3. Anyone?

BTW, the place above for the manuals sells them for $17.50 and the part # is 4L60E. From what the guy told me, they are very good for rebuilds for us none transmission guys... and they are on E-bay under same info.

The master kit sounds good. As for the converter, it depends entirely on how you plan to use your van. If it's going to be nothing more than a daily driver then go for the least amount of stall. If you plan on hammering it then the converter in your post is a good idea. \:D/ A larger boost valve is available. .500. I always use it because there is no good reason not to. \:D/

No daily driver here =;
This will be equipt for hammering )>)

No, really- This is a project van that demands alot of time a money (that's why it's taking soooo long). I'm not going out to race it on the weekend but i might take it to the strip just to see what she will do and might tinker with the setup after it's on the road.

I ordered the rebuild manual yesterday  and will give her a looksee before I order my kit.

Thanks again for the info... :D

4L60-E can only use the .490 Boost valve. The 4L60 non E which is a re named 700R4 can use the .500 but after 93 ( the E or electronically controlled trannies) cannot.

You may want to look into tweaking the accumulator springs and such as well. Also remember to remove the one check ball, the ATSG manual tells you which one. You also may want to get the ATSG updates booklet as well some of the stuff for the 4L60-E changed part way through 93 and then pretty much yearly after that.

This is the manual I got:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... 0185440138
THM 4L60E - ATSG TECHNICAL MANUAL-SAVE $$$ HERE

I thought it said that the updates book was needed for 96 and above? That's why I didn't get it... I will have to give it a look again tonight.

Do you know of a different kit or place that offers the complete kit with the accumulator springs included? Like I said, I'm currently a numskull when it come to transmissions. but I plan on changing that to an educated numskull!

I haven't seen one with the springs but you can generally find them floating around ebay. Try oreganperformancetransmissions on ebay. they are pretty good and carry alot. All I've ever seen of them is good stuff. That's where I get my stuff :)

Believe me tho your going to love the ATSG book. I definately love mine. I didn't realize there were like 12 different 4L60-E variations or models till I got mine. I even figured out how to turn a V6 tranny into a V8 tranny.
