Time to replace the heater core.

Radiator, thermostat, water pump, antifreeze, etc.

Time to replace the heater core.

Post by SafariRob »

Although I haven't seen any signs of leakage, the smell tells me that there's a leak somewhere in the heater, so it's time to look into it.
Back when I swapped in the V8, I installed a Stewart high flow water pump. Afterwards, I read that the increased water flow and pressure can shorten the life of a heater core. Don't know if that's true or not, but the present core was replaced about 30,000 miles ago. It'll be interesting to see how long the new one lasts.
Also, there's an 89 Astro at the junkyard that has the auxillary heater on the side wall behind the driver's seat. Might just get that and install it at the same time as the new core. My astro is drafty and extra heat sure wouldn't hurt. Anybody ever add the auxillary heater to their Astro?
