Dutch door window latches

Post by 1Gary »

The dutch door latches on my 1994 LT releases only on the passenger side.I had someone push the button while I tried to pull it open and nope, the driver's side is stuck.

Need some advise. Please and Thank You.

I did briefly look at the trim inside and didn't see how it comes apart.

Give me a picture of the latch. I have one in the shop. If it's the same, you can have it.

What has probably happened is one of the cheap plastic clips inside the liftgate has broken, resulting in a dangling rod end.

While (uncomfortably) seated inside the rear of your van, remove the two plugs from either end of the handle. Remove said handle and trim piece behind it. You now have access to the actuating rods.

had a similar problem with the rear hatch on my 96 Safari.... it didn't have the keyhole for the hatch, instead relied on a release button on the dash..... a buddy voluntarily greased the little friction plates and then I had the oposite problem, my hatch wouldn't stay closed, so I ended up bunji cording it shut...

i took my o1 safari up to my garage and took it apart. you will need a 10mm socket, neddle nose pliers, phillips head screw driver and a small flat screwdriver. i took of the little caps that are on the end of the handle. the caps are held on at the top and the bottom. there are 2 10mm bolts that hold handle on.then i could see the rod that had follen off i used neddle nose to pull rod to open the hatch. i then removed the plastic that goes around window. it is held on by 4 screws and clips that run along the top. then i removed the plate the handle was bolted to. it is silver and held on by 2 10mm bolts. i then pushed the rod back into the round plastic clip, it looks alot like the same ones that hold the rods on the front door latch. i did not see any thing broken but i did not put all the trim back on i want to see if i can get a new clip. just to be safe. i will let everyone know where i get the part and see if i can post pics. it is easy to do just make sure you dont break the trim that runs around the window the clips at the top are tough to get off

I had the same thing happen to my Safari. Everyone keeps slamming the window and knocking off the push rods inside.

It took a little bit to get it out, again, from the inside, but if you start taking out screws and bolts it becomes pretty obvious.

I used very small zip ties to hold the push rods in place and have not had a problem since. the zip ties were more readily available than any real part ;)
