Ontraio lake not frozen what kind of spring/summer??

Post by 1Gary »

Anyone want to venture a guess how a unfrozen lake would effect the spring/summer season??. Earlier spring-longer summer??.I did do a search and couldn't come up with anything. :-k

I would make a guess that Spring plants may bloom earlier because the winds from the lake will not be as cold as if they were blowing over ice.

Gary, Lake Ontario never freezes over ( at least not in our lifetime ) the weather is too wacky to predict thanks to HAARP and other influences...

But since you started this thread, what is your guess?

The shore line freezes is what I was thinking, not the whole thing. With that I was thinking that prolongs winter because how it effects the air temps. This yr not so much.So I thought maybe a earlier more rainy spring. The water table in the ground has got to be low due to the lack of snow. That might effect anything that grows. :-k

Lack of ground water compared to normal may cause some problems but it could also mean that farmers can get on their fields earlier :-k

We seem to be about 3-4 weeks ahead of sched, I think a shifting of the jet stream further north is to blame

Zam are you not forgetting that Gary, as a young man, use to conduct tours for the Vikings on their first visits to the New World across the ice.

Then as a teenager he also saw the glacier recede and ran back and forth yelling "it is melting, its melting !".

already feeling the effects in cleveland. i have a house on the east side up in the pounded by lake effect snow belt about 2 blocks south of the lake(erie). the lake usually freezes out as far as you can see. this year not at all. the ice normally doesn't break up until mid-late april after a normal cold winter, and spring along the shore usually has very chilly breezes off the lake.

as of right now the lillies are already 6" tall and there are buds on the flowering trees.

I was think more in the vein of you know how cold air creates lake effect snow??.Well without the shore line ice, wouldn't the reverse apply in spring with warm air over the a slightly warm lake create a more rainy spring??.

Gary, if the Lake ontario was frozen over how much lake effect snow would we have?.....none....Lake effect snow is caused by cold winds rushing over water evaporating off of the lake ( lake water warmer than the cold air )

We get rain from 3 different systems in Southern Ontario...
1, Funnelled up thru the Ohio valley
2, Massive evaporation off the Great lakes resulting in storms
3, Warm moist air coming off the gulf stream currents being sucked back ( counter clockwise ) and dumped in the Great Lakes region ( these are usually those 3-4 day constant rains that stall over us )

I don't think we can predict what will happen this spring/summer based on what type of winter we had.

This winter was perfect in Hamilton!! No Complaints here.. Used the snow blower once for four wet inches of snow.. A few dustings I used my backpack blower. Drained the tank on the snow blower today and got 3/4 gallon on the gallon tank. Great Winter.. Second week of march and hit 65 degrees. Cant complain at all!
