Transmission filter & gasket kit

Post by MountainManJoe »

Hey guys. Which is the correct kit for my van? The descriptions kind of suck.

my 2000 has a deep pan.

as far as i know, my 1995 has a shallow pan.

everything i've read seems to indicate that 1997-up transmissions (around the time of the removable bellhousing) are when the deep and shallow pans came about.

the deep pan measures about 2 7/8". the shallow pan measures about 2 1/4" from bolt flange to the bottom of the pan on the outside.

also found a link showing pictures of both types of pans.

ok that makes more sense.

So if I have a deep pan, do I use the 24208576 or the TF337?

There seems to be two different filter types. An all plastic one, and one with a metal bottom.
Does this look familiar to anyone?

It's hard to see, but this is the metal one. The shape is slightly different too (tf337)

Anybody in Canada know where to get a good price on gaskets and filters (tranny and diff cover)?

I know I'm really spamming my own topic here, but... on another note, if I want to get all the old fluid out of the cooler and lines with compressed air, is it easy to disconnect the fitting, or are the a one-time use kind of thing?

The only true way to replace all the fluid in a tranny is to bring it somewhere that has a fluid transfer machine or do it yourself with a couple 5 gallons buckets and hoses. There is a post around somewhere by SoCalliV8 of the do it yourself. The torque converter holds several quarts of fluid that you can not drain by dropping the pan.

I'm not that obsessive. I do run the van pretty hard, and get the tranny pretty hot, but I'm only going to flush out as much as I practically can. Whatever I don't reach now will just have to wait until the next service.

I changed my mind. Since I'm plumbing in an aux cooler, I might as well do a poor man's flush. I searched through SoCalliV8's post history and couldn't find the write-up you mentioned. Any info here would be helpful. :-k

You will want to do the filter change first. You then fill the trans up like you normally would. Then you run the cooler lines up front and put both into a bucket and start the van. run about 2 quarts into the bucket and shut the van off. Add 2 quarts to the tranny and repeat until you get nice clean red fluid going into the bucket. Then connect the aux cooler and recheck fluid level after filling the cooler. Keep an eye on the lever for a few days to make sure it is where it should be.

Just a couple of questions ...

Couldn't you disconnect the return line from the radiator, and run a hose from that into your bucket? That way you would flush it out as well.

Also, couldn't your drop that end of the return line into a container of fresh fluid to provide the tranny with a continuous supply?

RAD ∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙ WASTE ∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙ NEW ∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙TRANNY
∙∙ ╚═════════════════════════════╝
∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙ ← ∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙ ←

EDIT: This won't work very well. You would need pressure to feed the new fluid into the tranny this way.

Here's another idea...

Do not disconnect any hoses. Simply remove pan and place large catch basin under it. Shove a hose of the correct diameter into the the pickup tube (the one that the filter goes in) and put the other end into a container of fresh fluid. Run the engine and shift through the gears until you've sucked in all 12 quarts or whatever.

Think it might work?

I see one huge problem with the method you describe, Lifted.

Fluid coming OUT of the radiator goes back into the transmission and supplies all the clutches, gears, bearings etc. By disonnecting it, you are starving all those moving parts of lubrication.

When you fill the pan with fluid, it is pumped into the torque converter, and then back out to the radiator.

For the short time you are actually running the engine, you won't hurt anything. You don't shift into any gears, just leave it in park.

That is true, in fact only the torque converter moves as long the van is standing still, but doesn't the fluid move faster when in a drive gear?
